Proposal for a fabric-formed screen wall
Tunahaki theatre project, Tanzania

The objective was to form a concrete screen wall with perforations. The construction of the formwork must be able to be simply communicated to workers on-site and easy to manage using mostly hand tools. Both the proposed cast-in-place scheme and the tilt-up panel scheme are designed to be used repeatedly.

The cast-in-place screen wall is a series of 1.1m columns connected to a beam. Columns and beam are joined as one fluid component, being formed in one continuous pour. The formwork is self-stacking, whereby the formwork for each higher course is supported by the previous level, until several courses have achieved the desirable wall height.

Project completed at CAST with Leif Friggstad and Stephen Berry under the supervision of Ronnie Araya.
